Yarm 1914

Died of wounds 3 Feb 1918 aged 26. Son of George Danby, a fruiterer, auctioneer and cemetery superintendent, and Mary Ann his wife both of High St, Yarm. Danby had enlisted in Stockton. St Sever Cem Extn, Rouen, France

Yarm 1914 believe that Alfred was born in Yarm in 1893 to George and Mary Ann Danby. In 1901 the family was living in Yarm High Street and Alfred was 8. He had five brothers, John a bill poster aged 18, Tom aged 14 and a telegraph messenger, George aged 13, Edward aged 13 and Fred aged 5. Three sisters also lived in the house, Elizabeth aged 16, Mary Victoria aged 3 and Annie was the youngest at the time aged 2. Alfred's mother's maiden name was Mary Ann Mitchell born in September 1863 in Stockkton-on-Tees. She had 11 children in 21 years of marriage and died in September 1941 in Durham aged 78.
The census records for 1911 indicates the family home in the High Street was large withl six rooms. George, 51 is recorded as a market gardener and employs his two eldest sons George 23 and Edward 21. Alfred now 19 and a billposter and Fred a grocer's assistant. The last two immediate members of the family living in Yarm are brother Henry Cornwall Danby aged 9 and sister Lily 7. Elizabeth Danby married March Allsopp, a stonemason, in 1904 and gave birth to May in 1905 and George in 1906 before dying in 1907. The children moved in with their grandparents.
March also lived on Yarm High Street in 1911 and described in the census as widowed. He lived with his parents and brother, William Allsopp who died in 1915 and is remembered on the war memorial.
